The modern Rough Rider has an advantage over early single action revolvers. Just as we begin a young shooter with a single-shot bolt-action rifle, the single action revolver is a great place to begin the shooting life. The ejector rod-located in the ejector housing under the barrel-is then pressed to the rear to eject the spent cases one at a time as the cylinder is rotated. The gate is closed, and you are ready to fire.Īfter firing, the hammer is placed on half-cock and the gate opened again. The cartridges are loaded into the cylinders one at a time. The hammer is pulled to half-cock, and the loading gate is opened. Roughly similar in size to the now out of production Colt Scout, the Rough Rider operates in the same manner. The Rough Rider has the cowboy gun style we all like. The handgun has more of a cowboy look and is pretty popular. 22 revolver as much as anyone, a handgun that costs less than $200, but delivers good service, is appealing. 22 revolver is an inexpensive handgun to coax young shooters into safe handling and marksmanship. I live in Illinois where we aren’t allowed to have suppressors, so I can’t say much about that feature, but I know from participating in many industry shoots where they are allowed that shooting a. 22 LR Tactical Cowboy comes with a Picatinny top rail, a 6.5-inch barrel with threaded muzzle and thread protector, a fiber-optic front sight, simulated carbon-fiber grips, a six-shot cylinder, and a black oxide finish. Obviously, the top rail made installation much easier. I still have the scope, too, and I used it for the shooting session with the new Tactical Cowboy. The scope I used is a special 1X Burris pistol scope with a black dot and fine crosshairs reticle that my then-boss Gil Hebard partnered with Burris to create. That was before S&W started drilling and tapping the topstraps at the factory, so I did it myself, fitting a Burris scope mount to the revolver. The year was 1977 or 1978, and the gun was a Smith & Wesson Model 17 (I still own it).
